Former Capsule Hotel Becomes an Intersection of Art and Music: "Tokyo Jazz Club" Opens in Kanda-Nishikicho, Tokyo
Summary
A new art event, "Tokyo Jazz Club," is being held until November 8 at the former Nine Hours Otemachi capsule hotel in Kanda-Nishikicho, Tokyo. Launched by Robbie Okuda Fitzpatrick and Yael Salomonowitz, co-founders of the Basel Social Club that began in Switzerland in 2022, it was conceived as an independent project inspired by Japanese jazz culture and Tokyo's art scene, in collaboration with Art Week Tokyo. The entire building serves as an exhibition space, with former sleeping capsules, lounges, locker rooms, and shower booths repurposed into venues for different artworks and experiences. The first floor welcomes visitors with a large installation by GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE and a wall mural by Tomoo NAKAYASHIKI. The second floor features works installed inside the capsules, including Tsuyoshi MURAMOTO's "Imagraph" (2021-26), which creates a visual experience with light when visitors lie down inside a capsule and close their eyes, and a tiny work by Maurizio Cattelan that requires careful searching. The third floor houses a "Vinyl & Whisky Listening Lounge" inspired by Japanese jazz café culture, where records selected by VDS play and visitors can enjoy whisky while listening, with related materials on Keiichi TANAAMI and Fujio AKATSUKA, and works by Gabriel OROZCO and Kyuyo ISHIKAWA. The fourth floor is a "floor of silence" for quiet contemplation, showing works by Rivane NEUENSCHWANDER and Kentaro KAWABATA. The fifth floor focuses on video, featuring a work by Arthur JAFA, and the former locker room presents limited edition works by Barbara KRUGER and Yoko ONO through Item Idem. The project emphasizes regenerating spaces once used for individual rest into places for gathering and exchange, creating a cultural space where contemporary art, music, performance, food, and human interaction intersect.
