Enjoying Architecture and Art Together: Report on the Opening of the Second Phase of "Matsumoto Architecture Art Festival 2026 ADVANCE"
Summary
The second phase of the Matsumoto Architecture Art Festival 2026 ADVANCE has opened in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, and runs until December 13. Launched in 2022, the festival uses historical and modern buildings across Matsumoto as exhibition venues to explore the relationship between art and architecture. This fourth edition, with Osamu Ouchi continuing as general director, is held in two phases as a main program of "East Asian Cultural City 2026 Matsumoto." The first phase, a "Video Art Festival" held from February to March, featured nine artists' video works at Matsumoto City Museum. The second phase returns to the festival's original "town-walking" format, presenting exhibitions by 18 artists across 18 facilities and 19 venues. A major feature this time is the expansion of venue areas: in addition to the central city area, the Asama Onsen area has been newly added, spreading exhibitions across four areas—the castle town, the former Rokku shopping street, Asama Onsen, and Nishi (Historic Village).
