[Opening] Special Exhibition Commemorating the Grand Opening of the Sannomaru Shozokan: "Imperial Treasures: Where Beauty Blooms" — Shosoin Treasures, Jakuchu, Hokusai... A Stunning Lineup
Summary
The special exhibition "Imperial Treasures: Where Beauty Blooms," commemorating the grand opening of the Sannomaru Shozokan (the Museum of the Imperial Collections) in the Imperial Palace, runs from November 3, 2026, to January 24, 2027. This is the museum's largest exhibition to date, featuring approximately 190 works from the imperial collection, including numerous National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, displayed across three distinct periods with a complete rotation of all works. The first period showcases Shosoin Treasures beloved by Emperor Shomu, shown publicly within the Imperial Palace for the first time, alongside Ito Jakuchu's "Rising Sun and Phoenix" and Katsushika Hokusai's "Watermelon." The second period reunites the Horyuji Treasures associated with Prince Shotoku, including the National Treasure "Dragon-Head Ewer." The third period features Kano Eitoku's National Treasure "Chinese Lions Screen," about 60 bonbonnières created for imperial celebrations, and works from the Showa era as it marks its 100th year. The newly expanded galleries, about eight times larger than the former facility at roughly 1,300 square meters, offer a rare opportunity to trace the history of the imperial family and Japanese art from ancient times to the present.
