Feeling Light, Shadow, Boundaries, and the Presence of Absence: A Report on the "Andrew Wyeth Exhibition" (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum)
Summary
The "Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 100th Anniversary Commemorative Andrew Wyeth Exhibition" is being held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum until July 5th. This marks the first large-scale solo exhibition of the representative American figurative painter in Japan in 17 years. As Wyeth passed away during the previous exhibition period, this is the first time his works have been gathered together in Japan posthumously.
The exhibition uses "boundaries" as its central theme. Through motifs such as windows and doors, the works depict a world that separates yet connects life and death, and the self and others. The exhibition is organized into five perspectives: the true face of Wyeth, expressions of light and shadow, the 30 years with Olson House and Christina, his gaze in his later years, and the themes of boundaries and windows.
