Construction Hoarding Art Project 'Shibuya Matsudo Wall Gallery'. First Artist Decided as Photographer Rinko Kawauchi
Summary
The 'Shibuya Matsudo Wall Gallery' art project has started at the construction site of the 'Shibuya Upper West Project' on the former Tokyu Department Store main store site in Shibuya. The first installment, starting July 1, features photographer Rinko Kawauchi and is scheduled to run until September 30, 2027. This limited-time gallery utilizes construction hoardings to explore the theme of 'the flow of time, accumulation,' intersecting the memories of the former Tokyu Department Store with the progress of redevelopment into the future. The Matsudo area, located at the junction of Shibuya Station and Matsudo, is known as 'another Shibuya' distinct from the redevelopment around Shibuya Scramble Square. Historically a residential area for cultural figures and dignitaries since the Meiji era, the project aims to weave new history and culture. Kawauchi, born in 1972 in Shiga Prefecture, is known for works that delicately highlight elements like life and death, light and shadow within a soft and gentle atmosphere. For this project, she has newly photographed the surrounding area, capturing the daily activities at dusk and the changing cityscape. Additionally, this exhibition is a linked project with the 'Miracles of Gaze: Adventures of Japanese Female Photographers' currently held at Shibuya Hikarie Hall, offering opportunities to enjoy photography from various angles across Shibuya.
