The Izumiya Hakugaku Museum Tokyo will host the “Sumitomo Shunsui – The Sumitomo Modern Art Collection” from August 29 to October 12, 2026, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the former 15th head of the Sumitomo family, Sumitomo Shunsui (pen name Shunsui). The exhibition presents a chronological survey of the modern artworks—Chinese bronzes, Japanese and Western paintings, ceramics, tea utensils, Noh masks and costumes—that Shunsui acquired between the late Meiji and Taishō periods, highlighting how his dual sense of “house” and “self” shaped his collecting. Wall-mounted timelines and anecdotes of his patronage of contemporary artists allow visitors to reassess Shunsui’s aesthetic and the historical context of his collection.
