Special Exhibition "Kukai and the Treasures of Shingon" Held at Tokyo National Museum in July to Commemorate Kobo Daishi's 1250th Birthday. Voice Guide by Osamu Takeuchi
Summary
A special exhibition titled "Kukai and the Treasures of Shingon" will be held at the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno from July 14 to September 6 to commemorate the 1250th anniversary of the birth of Kobo Daishi (Kukai). This exhibition is part of the "Tsumugu Project," an initiative led by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Imperial Household Agency, and the Yomiuri Shimbun to widely introduce treasures connected to the Imperial Family, as well as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, to the world. The exhibition features 88 precious items from the eighteen main temples of Shingon Buddhism, which play a central role in supporting the "Go-shichi-nichi Miho" (post-seventh-day ritual), a supreme esoteric ceremony of the Shingon sect. This is the first time that all eighteen temples have gathered to exhibit their treasures together. The display allows visitors to experience the history and spread of Kukai and Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, as well as the faith in Kobo Daishi.
