Art and Music Festival 'DEFOAMAT' Returns for Second Year. Ruangrupa, Sugano Ayumi x NUTTOMICK, and Others Explore Urban Alternatives in Daikanyama
Summary
The urban festival 'DEFOAMAT', where art, music, and technology intersect, returns for its second year in Daikanyama, Tokyo, from May 13 to 17. The festival's concept is 'Poetry and New Options,' aiming to touch upon new possibilities for society through poetic and intellectual experiences. A major highlight is the project 'Shared Living Room' by the global art collective Ruangrupa, based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Held at 'MIDORI.so,' the exhibition is based on Ruangrupa's ongoing alternative agricultural research in the Tokyo metropolitan area since 2024. Rather than a space for viewing finished works, it is conceived as a social space close to daily life where acts like 'gathering, talking, printing, distributing, and thinking' occur simultaneously. Visitors can experience a process where relationships are formed through dialogue via zine printing, talks, and food. Additionally, at the Important Cultural Property 'Former Asakura House,' the contemporary artist Sugano Ayumi and the theater company NUTTOMICK (led by Hitoshi Akita) will present the roaming theater work 'The Day Something Answered.' In this work, which features original planning and scenography by Sugano and text and direction by Akita, visitors wear wireless headphones to tour the interior, exterior, and garden. It is planned as a performative installation where visitors experience 'displacement' and the presence of 'communication' through sound and space within the historic building that stands as if left behind by urban development.
