A New Art Destination Born in Bangkok. Opening Report of Dib Bangkok, Thailand's First International Museum of Contemporary Art
Summary
Dib Bangkok, Thailand's first international museum of contemporary art, opened on December 21, 2025, in a massive building renovated from a 1980s warehouse, becoming a new hub for contemporary art in Southeast Asia. The opening exhibition, "(In)visible Presence / ล่องไม่เห็น," features 81 works by 40 contemporary artists including Montien Bunma, James Turrell, Anselm Kiefer, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Alicia Quevedo, with the theme of "invisible presence." Curator Ariana Chaivaranon notes that many visitors were unaware that Thai artists work at an international level, a success the museum has already achieved. The museum, led by Japanese Director Miwako Tezuka, operates on a reservation and capacity-limited basis, welcoming three times the expected visitors in the first two months. The exhibition spans three floors, featuring immersive installations like Marco Fujinato's loud bat-chiming work and Anselm Kiefer's large-scale installation, while the outdoor space includes James Turrell's first work in Thailand. Bangkok is rapidly gaining attention in the contemporary art context, and Dib Bangkok's opening fills a significant gap in the region's infrastructure.
