Summary
The complete program for the inaugural "Maebashi International Art Festival 2026" (September 19 to December 20), set in the central city of Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, has been released. Under the theme "Mebuku. Where good things grow.", the festival will feature about 70 artists from diverse fields beyond contemporary art, including architecture, music, poetry, theater, and food. In addition to museum spaces like Arts Maebashi, more than 20 programs will be developed in collaboration with local Maebashi creators and the community. Masawo Kawamata will create an on-site installation of "Tree Huts" on a keyaki tree in front of Arts Maebashi and will present a public art project at the "Iyasobi Hiroba" annexed to the headquarters of Toa Bank. Martin Margiela, who has shifted from the fashion world to artist activities, will reorganize exhibitions held in Tokyo and Kyoto for this showcase. The exhibition will be held at Arts Maebashi and the Maebashi Gallery designed by Hiroshi Hiraishi, featuring collages, large sculptures, and video works.
