Summary
From June 14 to December 6, 2026, the Okada Museum of Art in Hakone will host the special exhibition 'Kin Gin Kira —The Brilliance of Japanese Art—'. The exhibition will showcase approximately 40 items, centering on Heian period classics and calligraphy, alongside paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, and lacquerware from the Momoyama period to the present. Gold, silver, and mica have long captivated people in both East and West, revered as symbols of sanctity, nobility, and power, or used for luxurious decoration. During the Heian period, when aristocratic culture flourished, gold and silver were frequently used together, and finely ground white mica was also favored. The delicate expressions of gold and silver, and the soft, white luster of mica, reflect the refined Japanese aesthetic. The exhibition highlights three main themes: the brilliance of Heian gold, silver, and mica and their revival; diverse expressions of gold and silver in painting and ceramics; and the brilliance of lacquer art from Japan, Ryukyu, and Korea. Visitors can enjoy beautiful paper for writing, elegant mica-stamped booklets, and screens adorned with gold and silver, among other diverse 'brilliant' artworks.
