Report on 'Kawai Gyokudo: Natsukashii Nihon no Joukei' (Yamasaki Museum of Fine Arts). Tracing Japan's Four Seasons and Primal Scenery
Summary
The Yamasaki Museum of Fine Arts is hosting a special exhibition titled "Kawai Gyokudo: Natsukashii Nihon no Joukei" (Kawai Gyokudo: Nostalgic Japanese Scenery) as the first installment of its 60th-anniversary celebrations. The exhibition, running from May 16 to July 26, reviews the career of the Japanese painter Kawai Gyokudo (1873–1957). Gyokudo studied the Maruyama-Shijo school as a foundation and later incorporated the style of the Kano school, carving out a new realm by moving from traditional landscape painting to modern landscape painting. He deeply loved Japan's mountains and rivers, continuously depicting the scenery of the four seasons, rural landscapes, and the figures living there with rich emotion. Through works ranging from early masterpieces to late-period pieces, the exhibition traces the "primal scenery" of nostalgic, timeless Japan that Gyokudo pursued throughout his life.
