Kin Gin Kira: Shimmering Japanese Art
Summary
Shining materials such as gold and silver have captivated people across the East and West since ancient times, revered as symbols of sanctity, nobility, and power, or used for luxurious decorations. In Japan, during the Heian period when aristocratic culture flourished, gold and silver were frequently used alongside a preference for powdered white mica, known as kira. The delicate expressions of gold and silver, along with the soft white shimmer of mica, reveal Japan's refined aesthetic sense. This exhibition features approximately 40 works, including paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, and lacquerware from the Momoyama period to the present day, centered around Heian period sutras and calligraphy.
