Summary
The Hakone Glass Forest Museum in Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, is holding a special exhibition titled "Painted Venetian Glass ~Hakone Glass Forest Museum Collection~" to commemorate its 30th anniversary. The exhibition focuses on Venetian glass depicted in Western paintings, combining the museum's glass works with reproductions to introduce its history from its inception to its golden age, decline, and revival. The highlight is a project to recreate the transparent vase depicted in Leonardo da Vinci's "Madonna of the Carnation" (c. 1475). This "phantom vase," which was considered impossible to create with the glassmaking technology of the time, has been brought back to life in the modern era under the supervision of glass art historian Rosa Barovier Mentasti and in cooperation with Venetian glass artist Davide Fin.
