Matsubang House | Kenta Kobayashi "TOKYO"
Summary
Kenta Kobayashi's solo exhibition "TOKYO" at TAV GALLERY in Nishi-Azabu showcases his unique approach to expanding the visuality of photography. The exhibition features works using Ricoh's "StareReap" inkjet technology and the new "TOKYO" series.
The "TOKYO" series utilizes depth maps—data quantifying the distance between a subject and a camera—to generate images via AI. This process results in grayscale gradients reminiscent of photograms in film photography. Rather than using AI merely to create new images, Kobayashi uses it to bridge existing visual languages with the way AI synthesizes vast amounts of data.
By combining his own photographic data with the AI's internal knowledge of Tokyo, the artist demonstrates how the photographer's gaze has expanded from the physical world to the vast digital traces and information domains stored within generative models.
