To the Intersection of Memory and Imagination: Group Exhibition "Daily Life and Imagination" Held at Zuien-an with Four Artists
Summary
The group exhibition "Daily Life and Imagination," inspired by Marcel Proust's novel "In Search of Lost Time," is held at Zuien-an in Kamigamo, Kyoto, from May 1 to June 7. Against the backdrop of smartphones and social media, where we continually record and re-edit daily events and memories, the exhibition recognizes this process itself as a form of "imaginative reconstruction." Starting from perspectives on the delicate interplay of memory, imagination, and daily life, it questions how memory is reconstructed in contemporary times. Zuien-an, a space where old architecture coexists with modern elements, resonates with the exhibition's concept. Through works by four artists—Nana Hirose & Kazuma Nagatsubo, Win Yongye (Yun Yongye), Yoshiyuki Oe, and Chitori Komatsu—the exhibition presents how everyday moments connect to imaginative realms and orients the experience toward evoking each viewer's own memories and sensations. Liu Lijie (Ryū Riketsu), based in Osaka, curates the show with a display composition that resonates with the "place" by focusing on memory and emotion inherent in the space. Introducing each artist's themes and practices, and including a scheduled live performance, the exhibition offers an opportunity to reconsider the nature of memory and the potential of imagination at the point where daily life and imagination, past and present, intersect.
