Report on the "Nukemichi Exhibition: Evade, Create, Live Together – Circuit for Living" (Arts Maebashi). Seven groups of artists show small paths within reality
Summary
The Nukemichi Exhibition “Evade, Create, Live Together – Circuit for Living” at Arts Maebashi ran until August 30, 2023, featuring seven artists from architecture, fashion, design, theater, street culture, and contemporary art. The exhibition explored the concept of “抜け道” (Nukemichi), small paths within reality, through their perspectives and practices. Director Kiyoshi Dehara remarked that “real reality itself can be a kind of Nukemichi,” citing protected spaces like Ajir and Asylum as examples. Curator Yuka Takahashi explained that in a world where art and society are increasingly entangled with stagnation, anxiety, rationality, and competition, the exhibition invites artists to create new paths by reinterpreting reality, evading norms, and reshaping it. One highlighted work was the play “You Will Be Happy” and “I Became Happy,” co‑written by playwright Yamamoto Takuto and staged by artist Shin Sano, which divided the audience between an upper world and a lower world, allowing them to experience the notion of happiness beyond bodily and temporal limits.
