8 Artists to Bring Shunji Iwai's "Mermaid Town" to Life Through Art. Large-Scale Public Art Project Launches at TOFROM YAESU TOWER
Summary
Tokyo Tatemono, in collaboration with the Hakone Open-Air Museum and CEKAI, will launch the public art project "TOFROM YAESU TOWER ART: Mermaid Town" at the upcoming TOFROM YAESU TOWER, scheduled to open on September 10.
The project centers on an original story, "Mermaid Town," written by film director Shunji Iwai specifically for this facility. The narrative weaves together historical facts and fantasy to depict the history of exchange between Japan and overseas, the transition from Edo to Tokyo, and the layers of time embedded in the Yaesu area.
Eight artists—Kota Iguchi, Takuto Ota, Tomohiro Kato, Misai Kono, Hiroto Kobayashi, secca, Takahiro Matsuo, and MULTISTANDARD—will create works including video, sculpture, and installations. Visitors will experience the story by navigating through the various artworks placed throughout the building. The project, designed by art unit SoSoSo, aims to connect urban memory with modern creativity through both physical and digital spaces.
