Masayuki Tanaka has been appointed as the new director of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, effective May 1. He succeeds the outgoing director, Yayoi Komatsu, who retired on April 30. Born in 1963, Tanaka graduated from the Department of Art History at the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Letters and later studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, for five years. He served as a researcher at the National Museum of Western Art before becoming an associate professor at the Museum of Fine Arts, Musashino University, and later a professor and director of the university's art museum library. Currently, Tanaka serves as the Chairman of the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum Organization and the Director of the National Museum of Western Art. Starting in April, he will also assume the position of Director of the New National Art Research Institute. Consequently, he will be holding four top positions concurrently.
