Monet's 'Water Lilies' also included. The collections of five National Museums begin free download provision of public domain works.
Summary
The National Art Research Center (NCAR) of the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art has started providing free downloads of image data for public domain works whose copyright protection period has expired. This initiative involves 1,4063 image data points from the collections of five museums: the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; the National Museum of Western Art; the National Museum of Art, Osaka; and the National Museum of Art, Tokyo. Users can now easily access images of these works through the 'Comprehensive Catalog Search System for National Museum Collections' (5-museum Integrated Catalog). The collection includes masterpieces such as Claude Monet's 'Water Lilies' (1916) from the Matsukata Collection held by the National Museum of Western Art. Previously, obtaining images of works often required individual approaches or applications; however, from now on, they can be freely downloaded without charge directly from the work detail pages of the 5-museum Integrated Catalog. This move is part of efforts to create an environment where cultural heritage can be used more closely and is expected to be utilized flexibly in a wide range of applications, including educational and research settings, creative activities by creators, and personal appreciation.
