Large-scale retrospective of Mako Idemitsu, a pioneer of Japanese video art, to be held
Summary
The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will host a major retrospective exhibition titled "Mako Idemitsu: The Works of a Woman – Autobiography of a Video Artist" from June 18 to September 21, featuring the works of pioneer video artist Mako Idemitsu.
This exhibition marks the first comprehensive public display of the museum’s collection of her films, videos, and installations acquired between 2016 and 2017. Visitors can explore her evolution over three decades through key works like "What a Woman Made" (1973) and "A Day of a Housewife" (1977), which showcase her signature "Mako Style" of nested monitor projections. In addition to installations, 40 of her works will be screened in programs, including newly printed 16mm films.
The event will also include the publication of an exhibition catalog featuring interviews and a series of talk events with guest speakers to discuss Idemitsu’s exploration of women’s roles, family, and media society.
