Large-Scale Retrospective of Raoul Dufy at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno to Open in 2027, Featuring Numerous Works from the Collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris
Summary
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Raoul Dufy, a leading French painter of the 20th century known for his mastery of "color and light," the exhibition "Dufy Exhibition" will be held at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno from April 24 to August 22, 2027. Centered on works from the collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the exhibition introduces Dufy’s vibrant depictions of gentle subjects such as seas, ships, music, wheat fields, and pastoral landscapes, as well as his diverse creative range extending beyond canvas to textiles, costume design, ceramics, tapestries, and furniture. A highlight of the exhibition is the first visit to Japan of the original cartoon (full-scale preparatory drawing) for the monumental fresco "The Spirit of Electricity," measuring 60 meters in width, created for the 1937 Paris International Exposition; a precious scaled painting (6 meters wide) at one-tenth scale will be displayed. The exhibition also presents numerous sketches, studies, and prints, allowing Dufy’s bright and lively colors to spread across Ueno in spring 2027. A touring venue will be held at Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art from September 11 to December 12 of the same year.
