Introducing 39 Postwar Japanese Women Artists. Europe's First Large-Scale Exhibition 'Kaihō' to be Held at Luxembourg Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM)
Summary
From September 25, 2026 to February 14, 2027, Mudam Luxembourg will present 'Kaihō: Japanese Women Artists after 1945,' Europe's first large-scale exhibition dedicated to postwar Japanese women artists. Featuring approximately 120 works by 39 artists spanning 1945 to the early 21st century, the show examines emotional, political, and conceptual expressions shaped by Japan's rapid social transformation. It challenges Western-centric art histories and fixed national identities, highlighting artists such as Atsuko Tanaka, Yayoi Kusama, Yoko Ono, Fumiko Nakajo, Chiharu Shiota, and others. The exhibition situates their practices within broader Asian, European, American, and Brazilian contexts, aiming to reveal diverse narratives of women's artistic production in postwar Japan.
