MoN Takanawa in Tokyo's Takamatsu Gateway has been selected for UNESCO's 'World's Most Beautiful Museums 2026' award.

Summary

MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives, opened in 2023 at Tokyo's Takamatsu Gateway, has been selected for UNESCO's Prix Versailles award in the category 'The World's Most Beautiful Museums 2026'. This marks the second Japanese museum to receive this honor, following Shimosé Art Museum in 2024. The Prix Versailles evaluates architecture not only for aesthetic beauty but also for its integration of environmental, social, and cultural sustainability under the principle of 'Intelligent Sustainability'. Architect Kengo Kuma, who designed the exterior, described the building as a 'green hill' within the city, enabling free movement between art, performance, and information—thus reviving freedom in urban space. Jerome Gadan, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, praised the museum as an inspiring example of sustainable urban culture that opens new possibilities for Tokyo. Other selected institutions include the Zayed National Museum, Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, Xuelei Perfume Museum, Lost Stettler Museum, National Medal of Honor Museum, and the Center for Islamic Civilization. The overall, interior, and exterior awards will be announced at the ceremony this December.
