Summary
A new book titled "Experts Look Here: The Most Understandable Guide to Japanese Art Appreciation" (Chikuma Shobo), written by Aoi Nikki-cho (Masato Nakamura), a writer for the "Art Exhibition Navigator," will be released on May 10. This book is a guide that pursues "how to make works interesting to view" through interviews with seven experts specializing in Japanese art from the Azuchi-Momoyama period onwards. The cover features Hasegawa Tōhaku's "Pine Trees Screen" from the 16th century (Azuchi-Momoyama period). In the interview with Taisei Kuroda, interesting background stories about the work are revealed, such as how Hasegawa Tōhaku spared no means to counter the dominant Kano school of his time, and how his paintings were created under immense pressure from Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The concept for this book existed before the COVID-19 pandemic, and Nakamura spent a long time writing it. Nakamura states, "I have matured the words, refined the questions, and confirmed clues one by one to approach the works." He asserts that the title "The Most Understandable" is not just a decoration. The book is a readable paperback priced at 1,100 yen with a size of 216mm.
