Tsukimikan: A Small Luxury Hotel Where Gems of Arts and Crafts Gather
Summary
In Kyoto, a hot spring inn named "Tsukimikan" has been reborn as a small luxury hotel located on the site of Fushimi Castle, built by the powerful feudal lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The inn features a gallery called "Kagetsudo" where guests can view a collection of arts and crafts gathered by the owner, including a 11-faced Kannon statue and a copy of the Dunhuang murals. The interior has been renewed into a pristine space reflecting the owner's aesthetic sense as an art collector, while preserving the building as a nationally registered tangible cultural property. All guest rooms are suites designed with inspiration from Buddhist philosophy, featuring antique Nordic furniture, including works by the renowned Danish designer "Finn Juhl". The 3rd floor houses the large art gallery "Kagetsudo" measuring 120 tatami mats, featuring a 14th-century statue and an overwhelming VR experience. Guests can enjoy specialty sake at a bar where light and art intersect, and a special breakfast prepared by a long-established kaiseki restaurant. The inn also features a garden created by a master craftsman and a tea room related to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, scheduled for completion this spring.
