15 Years Since the Great East Japan Earthquake: 'Fukushima Biennale 2026 Cinematic ∞Art' Staged in the 8 Towns of Futaba District, Fukushima Prefecture
Summary
The Fukushima Biennale 2026, marking 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear disaster, will be held from August 23 to September 26 in the eight towns of Futaba District, Fukushima Prefecture. Organized by the Fukushima Contemporary Art Biennale Executive Committee and the University of Fukushima’s Institute for Regional Creation, the event centers on the theme “∞,” symbolizing infinite expansion, human connections, the rebirth of the “twin‑leaf” region, and the cyclical life depicted in the 7th‑century Kiyota‑sato Horizontal Cavern mural. Featuring around 88 works—including new pieces by artists such as Miyabi Hasegawa, Ai Iwane, and international contributors from the United States, France, Bangladesh, as well as local masters like Shinpei Takizawa and Katsuhiko Mochizuki—the biennale utilizes diverse sites such as the former Nagasawa Elementary School, the Fukushima Disaster & Nuclear Accident Heritage Museum, and local community centers. Programs include workshops, film screenings, lectures, and a STEAM symposium “Eternal Land and Sea” on September 5, exploring geology, the Futa-ba dragonfly, and bio‑minerals.
