Nara Prison Museum by Hoshino Resorts Opens: The Significance of Utilizing a 100-Year-Old Important Cultural Property
Summary
Hoshino Resorts has renovated the former Nara Prison, preserving its main gate and other structures, and opened the "Nara Prison Museum" under the "Hoshinoya Nara Prison" brand. The museum is divided into Building A and Building B. Building A houses a model of the Nara Prison and models of the five major Meiji-era prisons. Building B presents exhibitions on "Discipline and Daily Life," followed by a "Freedom" section featuring contemporary artists such as Miyabi Nishio, Mitsuru Mitamura, Sachiko Kazama, and original works by Kazu Hanawa, as well as pieces submitted to the "Prison Arts Connections" exhibition. Visitors can write postcards in the "Room of Connection," which may be delivered to incarcerated individuals. A museum shop and café sell products made by prisoners nationwide, creating a cultural hub that blends historical preservation with modern art.
