Report on the Opening of 'Waves and Coral Reefs - Eight Practices of Throwing Architecture Far Away' (WHAT MUSEUM). Glimpsing 'Fragments' of Architects' Thoughts Through Models
Summary
A group exhibition titled "Waves and Coral Reefs - Eight Practices of Throwing Architecture Far Away" has opened at WHAT MUSEUM in Tokyo's Oarai Island, running until September 13. The exhibition features external curator Taichi Sunaki from the architecture collective SUNAKI. WHAT MUSEUM, known as the "Architecture Warehouse," has long utilized its collection of over 800 architectural models to disseminate architectural thinking through exhibitions. This exhibition redefines models not merely as scaled-down previews of completion, but as media carrying fragments of concepts and thoughts, focusing on their expansive aspects. In the modern era, where efficiency and urgent problem-solving are demanded, this exhibition uses models to conceive relationships with the environment and society over long timeframes, thereby re-examining the scope of architectural thought. Participating artists include ALTEMY, Office Yuasa, Garage, GROUP, DOMINO ARCHITECTS, Hatakeyama Tetsuo + Yoshino Taiki + Archipelago Architects Studio, Hirano Toshiki, and RUI Architects.
