Summary
To commemorate the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Italy, the Kagoshima City Museum of Art will hold a small exhibition titled "Italy and Kagoshima — Connections in Art." The exhibition will introduce artworks from the museum's collection that have connections to Italy. Part 1, "Learning from and Admiring Italy — Local Artists with Ties to Italy," features local artists who left a significant mark on the history of modern Japanese art. This includes Isomaru Arishima and Takeji Fujishima, who studied in Italy, and Shunyo Sone, who studied under an Italian painter at the Technical Fine Arts School during the Meiji era, as well as Seiji Togo, who engaged with the Italian modern art movement "Futurism." Part 2, "Italian Modern Art — Sculpture and Painting from the Collection," displays sculptures and paintings by Italian artists held by the museum, including representatives of Italian modern sculpture like Marino Marini and Lucio Fontana, who revolutionized painting space, as well as Venzio Crocetti, Giacomo Manzù, and Emilio Greco. Additionally, posters from previous exhibitions related to Italian art held at the museum will be introduced.
