Tate Britain Turner Exhibition "Sublime Painting, Dialogue with Contemporary Art" to be held at the National Museum of Western Art in October. Attention drawn to dialogue between Turner's paintings and contemporary art
Summary
The "Tate Britain Turner Exhibition: Sublime Painting, Dialogue with Contemporary Art" will be held at the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo, from October 24, 2027, to February 21, 2028. The exhibition is also scheduled to tour the Osaka Museum of Fine Arts. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) is regarded as one of the greatest painters in British art history. He depicted the changing light and atmosphere, raging seas and skies, and the steam and smoke emitted by humans during the Industrial Revolution, sometimes with meticulous detail and sometimes abstractly. His efforts expanded the possibilities of painting and opened up new horizons in art history. This exhibition is a major retrospective featuring over 80 works, including oil paintings and watercolors, from the Tate's collection, which boasts the world's largest Turner collection. The exhibition is structured with a prologue and seven chapters, reorganizing works by theme and displaying them along a loose chronological timeline. Furthermore, it presents a dialogue between Turner's paintings and contemporary art, suggesting that his concerns resonate with the interests of later artists.
