Mika Ninagawa to Appear at Koganei City Museum of Art Opening Exhibition: "Light of Beginnings" Traces Creative Origins
Summary
The newly established Koganei City Museum of Art in Saitama Prefecture will host a special opening exhibition titled "Mika Ninagawa Exhibition: Light of Beginnings" starting September 12. The exhibition, which takes place in Koganei City where Ninagawa spent her childhood, focuses on her work as a photographer, film director, and contemporary artist, deviating from her recent large-scale installations with the Creative Team "EiM". The show explores the core of her expression by centering on "photography" and weaving in video and family memories. Influenced by her childhood memories in the city, including the "Okame Market" and scenes from pink films, Ninagawa presents a world where reality and fiction intertwine. The exhibition is divided into two chapters. The first chapter introduces new works, including the centerpiece "Self-image," a monochrome self-portrait that has been intermittently shot for about 30 years since her debut. Additionally, the series "The days were beautiful," recorded over the year and a half following her father's illness and death, is featured. Ninagawa describes this work as "photographs taken with the eyes of the departing person," capturing landscapes and moments of daily life filled with light as she faced death.
