Summary
The Hokusai Museum in Obuse Town, Nagano Prefecture, will host an exhibition titled "100 Ghost Stories of Ukiyo-e: Horrifying Hokusai Paintings" from June 17 to July 26. The exhibition is themed around "Hyakumonogatari," a popular storytelling event in the Edo period. It focuses on the element of "terror" essential to ghost stories and introduces 100 works related to eerie ghosts, yokai, and supernatural tales. Highlights include illustrations for books of ghost stories, such as "Kansei Kaidan Shimoyozora" by Ryutei Tanehiko and "Hokuetsu Kidan" by Kankokuran, as well as paintings of various ghosts, including the flesh-and-blood work "Seigubi" (Living Head) by Katsushika Hokusai. The exhibition also showcases a wide range of yokai from "Hokusai Manga," including kappa, kamaitachi, tengu, nue, rokurokubi, and oni. During the exhibition period, related events such as a ghost storytelling session with storyteller Yoma Yutaka and gallery talks by curators are scheduled.
