Report on “Swiss Painting’s Genius Karl Walzer: The Dark Afterglow of the Century’s End” (Tokyo Station Gallery). Focus on 150 Unseen Works and Works Created During His Stay in Japan
Summary
From April 18 to June 21, 2024, the Tokyo Station Gallery hosts “Swiss Painting’s Genius Karl Walzer: The Dark Afterglow of the Century’s End,” a comprehensive survey of the Swiss painter active in the early 20th century. About 150 pieces are on display for the first time in Japan, with special emphasis on works created during his 1908 visit to Japan, where he depicted landscapes, kabuki, and festivals in watercolor and oil. The exhibition also presents his illustrations, stage designs, and murals, illustrating Walzer’s cross‑disciplinary practice and his distinctive Symbolist‑influenced, subtly colored style.
