Opening 50th Anniversary Preview Event Collection 1: I / Act
Summary
The National Museum of Art, Osaka opened in 1977 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027. To mark this milestone, the museum will hold a two-part collection exhibition in fiscal 2026. The first part, titled "Collection 1: I / Act," will review the trends and background of art from the museum's founding year of 1977 to the present day, utilizing its collection. While the museum has focused on "contemporary" art since its inception, its collection also includes "modern" art. The term "contemporary" does not refer to a specific era but can be translated as "of the same time" or "current." What is now called "modern" was once the "contemporary" art of its time. The exhibition explores the establishment of the "I" as the subject of creation, its fluctuations, and the transformation of discourse surrounding the act of creation. Through representative works, it traces the development of art that continues to be reconsidered and updated. Featured artists include Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Léonard Fujita, Marcel Duchamp, Kunisada Kuniyoshi, Giorgio Morandi, Man Ray, Kazuo Shiraga, Jung Jin-seok, Atsuko Tanaka, Ruth Asawa, Akiko Tabata, and others. The exhibition runs from July 19 to November 3, 2026, at the National Museum of Art, Osaka.
