The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will host the special exhibition 'British Museum Japanese Art Collection: Flowers in Full Bloom - Edo Painting Across the Sea' from July 25 to October 18, 2026, to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The exhibition will then tour to the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum from October 31, 2026, to January 31, 2027. The British Museum houses one of the world's most comprehensive and high-quality Japanese art collections. This exhibition features selected masterpieces from the museum's vast collection of over 40,000 items, including Edo-period screens, hanging scrolls, and handscrolls. Highlights include the first return to Japan of Hokusai's 'Mandala of All Things' woodblock printing blocks, Okumura Tōwaki's 'Tiger Cubs Crossing a River Screen,' and Katsushika Hokusai's 'Reading Courtesan' by Kitagawa Utamaro. Additionally, the exhibition showcases woodblock prints by eight representative ukiyo-e masters, including Utamaro, Sharaku, Hokusai, and Hiroshige.
