Miyajima Tatsuo to hold public verification experiment of project planned for installation in Tomioka Town, Fukushima Prefecture in Nihonbashi
Summary
From July 4 to 12, 2026, the "Time of the Sea – TOHOKU" Project Executive Committee and the General Incorporated Foundation Fukushima Tomioka Cultural Foundation will hold a public verification experiment of Tatsuo Miyajima's work "Sea of Time – TOHOKU" at the Mitsuishi Hall in Nihonbashi, Chuo City, Tokyo. This work is intended to be permanently installed at the "Time of the Sea – TOHOKU Museum" under construction in Tomioka Town, Fukushima Prefecture. Miyajima initiated the "Time of the Sea – TOHOKU" project to honor the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and inherit its memory, collaborating with people who care about the Tohoku region. The work features LED digital counters symbolizing the eternity of life, where 3,000 participants each set a time (in seconds) imbued with their thoughts, creating a sea of light on a 22.5×40m water basin that connects people's memories and prayers to the future. Designed by Tsuyoshi Tane, the museum is located on a hill overlooking the sea in Tomioka Town, between the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear power plants. This public verification experiment is the first attempt to verify critical processes directly connected to the completion of the work and the museum architecture, such as "LED light density and spatial balance," "the impact of natural light on viewing," and "viewing circulation and safety in a dark environment." The entrance fee for this project will be used entirely for the preparation of the establishment of the "Time of the Sea – TOHOKU Museum."
