Natsuyuki Nakanishi: An Apparatus That Stands Forever to Gaze Gently
Summary
This article announces the first retrospective exhibition for Natsuyuki Nakanishi (1935-2016), a leading contemporary Japanese painter, held ten years after his death. The main objective is to trace his artistic trajectory starting from the late 1950s and reveal his unique perspective on painting. Nakanishi's work is characterized by not necessarily depicting a specific subject, making it difficult to classify as purely figurative or abstract. His artistic practice constantly returns to fundamental questions: how does a "picture" appear on the canvas, and where is the "place" where painting exists? This exhibition is intended to offer valuable insights for reconsidering the act of creating paintings, especially in Japan. The exhibition runs from March 14 to June 14, 2026, at The National Museum of Art, Osaka.
