Collection Exhibition III Special Feature: Five Years Since the Death of Shigehisa Kikuhata
Summary
This exhibition commemorates the fifth anniversary of the death of Shigehisa Kikuhata (1935–2020), a key member of the avant-garde art group "Kyushu-ha" based in Fukuoka and a standard-bearer for anti-art. The museum's collection will be used to review his artistic achievements, which left a significant mark on the post-war Japanese art scene. Born in Nagasaki, Kikuhata began painting independently, joined the formation of "Kyushu-ha" in 1957, and gained international attention with his "Roulette" series in the 1960s. He later distanced himself from art production, focusing on researching war and coal mine record paintings before resuming painting and releasing the "Tendo-setsu" (Heliocentric Theory) series in 1983. In addition to Kikuhata's works, the exhibition will feature pieces by artists from contemporary avant-garde groups like Gutai Art Association and Jikken Kobo, alongside Western masterpieces by artists such as Renoir and Rouault, providing an overview of post-war art trends. The exhibition runs from January 31 to May 6, 2026.
