【Art Personnel Navi ~ From BMFA Member Museums】③ Chiba City Museum of Art: Tomoko Matsuo and Shiori Tabei (Part 2) "After the renewal, we believe it has become a museum where you can stay for a whole day"
Summary
The Chiba City Museum of Art, celebrating its 30th anniversary, has evolved into a 'museum where one can stay for a whole day' following its expansion and renewal. According to Deputy Director Tomoko Matsuo, new spaces include a permanent exhibition hall on the 5th floor and the 'Tsukurikake Lab' (Work-in-Progress Lab) on the 4th floor. The permanent galleries now allow for balanced and fresh presentations of the collection's three pillars: art related to the Boso Peninsula, pre-modern/modern Japanese painting and prints, and post-1945 contemporary art. The lab offers a participatory space where exhibits change based on visitor interaction, aligning with current trends in contemporary art. Curator Shiori Tabei detailed the current special exhibition, "The Rockefeller Collection Ukiyo-e Exhibition of Flowers and Birds, Centered on Hokusai and Hiroshige," showcasing high-quality works from the RISD collection. This exhibition explores Edo-period appreciation for nature and the focused collecting aesthetic of Abby Rockefeller. Matsuo also suggested comparing the unique approaches of collectors like Rockefeller and Peter Drucker (whose collection is also featured) to understand different perspectives on Japanese art, encouraging visitors to explore the entire museum complex.
