International Art Exhibition "TOKYO ATLAS" Held on Tokyo Bay Shoreline, Featuring Yayoi Kusama's First Unveiled Work in Japan
Summary
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo International Culture and Arts Festival Executive Committee will host the inaugural international art exhibition, "TOKYO ATLAS," this autumn, running from October 10th to December 20th. The venue spans the Tokyo Bay shoreline areas, including Odaiba, parks, Aomi, and Tennozu, transforming the urban space itself into the stage for this large-scale exhibition, moving beyond traditional museum settings. The title "ATLAS" references the mythological giant Atlas and the word for 'map book,' conceptualizing the act of touring scattered works as an experience of drawing a new map, aiming to offer new perspectives on existing landscapes and infrastructure. The artistic directors are Akira Tatehata, director of the Yayoi Kusama Museum, and Akiko Miki, director of the Naoshima New Museum of Art. Key sites include Odaiba Park, a former 19th-century battery, where works like Yayoi Kusama's "Narcissus Garden" (1966-) will be displayed alongside installations by Zhao Yao and Kenta Ishige. At Aomi South Pier Park, performances and projects will take place against the backdrop of international logistics. Additionally, a massive, currently suspended underground parking lot will be specially opened to the public for exhibitions by artists such as Katie Paterson and Ipe' Nur.
