16th Gwangju Biennale Announces Participating Artists
Summary
The Gwangju Biennale Foundation announced the participating artists for the 16th Gwangju Biennale, opening on September 5, 2026. Artistic Director Ho Tschuy-Nyen selected the theme "You must change your life" from a line by Rainer Maria Rilke, bringing together 43 artists from around the world. The exhibition focuses on the power of art to create change in uncertain times, specifically examining continuous practices that prompt a reconfiguration of body and perception. Despite being the smallest number of participating artists in the Gwangju Biennale's history, the diverse practices span a wide range of fields. Notable Japanese participants include Daisuke Kosugi, who will present over 60 works; Maya Watanabe; and sound artist Akio Suzuki. Additionally, Kwon Byungjun and Park Chan-kyong will collaborate on a citizen participation project inspired by the Korean traditional ritual "Bullim."
