SCARTS×CoSTEP Art & Science Project Exhibition Yasusuke Nagata 'Digging the Wind' @ Sapporo Cultural Exchange Center SCARTS
Summary
As part of the SCARTS×CoSTEP Art & Science Project, the Sapporo Cultural Exchange Center SCARTS will host an individual exhibition titled 'Digging the Wind' by invited artist Yasusuke Nagata. Yasusuke Nagata (born 1990 in Aichi Prefecture) is based in Kanagawa and creates photography, video, and installations, focusing on the binary oppositions supporting modern thought—such as self and other, nature and culture, body and environment—and the ambiguities hidden within them. Recently, Nagata has addressed issues surrounding national identity in food culture, body techniques and power relations in dining etiquette, and the management of living plants and animals in food production, presenting video essays and performance works in the format of a multi-course meal. This exhibition, set against the project's theme of 'Regenerative,' highlights Nagata's observation that regeneration is not limited to environmental restoration but is deeply entangled with complex social relationships, including consumers and producers, the artificial and the natural, and the economy and environmental protection. Nagata expands his interest from primary industries like agriculture and fishing to the fundamental energy resources, particularly renewable energy, questioning the nature of energy in the context of massive power demands from the information industry and political and economic considerations. During the exhibition period, an artist talk with researchers and a workshop titled 'Letter to F~A Letter to the Future of Energy~' will also be held.
