Art Exhibition 'What World Do You See?' Planned by Rissho University Student in Kumagaya
Summary
The art exhibition "What World Do You See?" planned by Chika Sakuma, a third-year student at Rissho University's Faculty of Social Welfare, will be held from June 12 to 14 at the event plaza on the first floor of Nitto Mall in Kumagaya City. Sakuma utilized the university's unique "Challenge Scholarship System," a merit-based scholarship program that selects only one student per faculty based on an entrance essay and exam. Having been a member of the art club in junior and senior high school, she was deeply influenced by the works of railway painter Hisashi Fukushima displayed in her junior high school hallway. She aims to be a social worker and discovered disability art while searching for the intersection of her favorite art and welfare. Reflecting on her experience at a disability art exhibition where she learned that the works were created not for the sake of art but as "parts" for self-expression and communication, she shifted her exhibition's concept. Instead of simply asking for paintings, she decided to create a display that allows visitors to feel the inner worlds and daily lives of people with disabilities more closely. With the cooperation of welfare facilities and organizations such as "Minuma Welfare Association Workshop Group" and "Social Welfare Corporation Subaru," approximately 35 works including watercolors, ballpoint pen drawings, embroidery, beads, paintings, and three-dimensional pieces will be exhibited. Each piece will feature explanatory texts written by Sakuma herself based on her own research. The exhibition runs from 10:00 to 18:00 (16:00 on the final day) and is free to enter.
