Report on 'Yukio Hideshima Exhibition: Dark Fantasy / Mysterious — A Talent Born in Minamata' (Kumamoto City Museum of Modern Art). Tracing the Unique Artist's Footsteps and the Landscape that Nurtured Him
Summary
Currently on view at the Kumamoto City Museum of Modern Art until June 21, 2024, the exhibition 'Yukio Hideshima: Dark Fantasy / Mysterious — A Talent Born in Minamata' marks the artist’s first retrospective in 25 years. Hideshima (1934–2018), a painter and printmaker born in Minamata, Kumamoto Prefecture, was largely self-taught after losing both parents in his youth and entering the workforce early. He gained recognition from influential figures including art critic Katsumi Tsuchikata, painter Kinosuke Ebihara, printmaker Akira Hamada, poet Michirō Takahashi, and haiku poet Fūko Yasuda. He also created numerous illustrations for writer Michiko Ishimure’s works, especially her series 'Kaze no Fune' ('The Wind’s Boat'), with whom he shared a profound mutual influence on each other’s worldviews. Following his sudden death in 2018, approximately 2,200 works—including masterpieces, original printing blocks, unpublished pieces, preparatory materials, and his personal art and craft collection—were preserved at his final residence in Watsuki Town, Kumamoto. A collaborative investigation by Watsuki Town and the museum formed the foundation for this exhibition, which presents over 260 works spanning the 1950s to the 2010s, offering a comprehensive view of Hideshima’s singular artistic journey.
