“Nobuya Hitsuda: The Scenery That Passed By” (Toyota Municipal Museum of Art) Opening Report. What does it mean to paint scenery?
Summary
The Toyota Municipal Museum of Art has launched “Nobuya Hitsuda: The Scenery That Passed By,” a major solo exhibition of the painter Nobuya Hitsuda. Born in 1941, Hitsuda is renowned for his influential teaching career at institutions like the Aichi University of the Arts and the Tokyo University of the Arts, mentoring artists such as Yoshitomo Nara. This exhibition, his first museum retrospective in approximately 15 years, features around 120 works ranging from his 1960s beginnings to his 2026 latest pieces. Through a unique spatial design by STUDIO O / Odoriba, the exhibition explores Hitsuda’s lifelong investigation into the relationship between "scenery" and "painting," supported by personal documents and archives.
