A large-scale retrospective exhibition of Ettore Sottsass, a representative of 20th-century Italian design, opened at Artizon Museum in Tokyo's Kyobashi. The exhibition, titled 'Ettore Sottsass — When Magic Begins, Design is Born,' runs until October 4. Born in 1917 in Innsbruck, Austria, Sottsass created numerous masterpieces for Olivetti and Porto Rotondo in the 1950s. In the 1980s, he founded the international designer collective 'Memphis' and caused a sensation with his bold designs. After leaving Memphis around 1985, he continued to create playful and challenging designs until his death at the age of 90 in 2007.
