Takashima Noriro Exhibition: 50 Years After His Death
Summary
This exhibition, held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Takashima Noriro (1890–1975), a Japanese painter from Fukuoka Prefecture, is the largest retrospective of his work to date. Featuring approximately 170 items, including his representative works themed around "candles" and "the moon," as well as works by related artists such as Aoki Mokubei, Sakamoto Fujijiro, and Kishida Ryusei, the exhibition explores the roots of his art and his Buddhist philosophy. It also focuses on lesser-known aspects of his career, such as his youth and his time in Europe. Additionally, through letters and memos from those who knew him, the exhibition sheds light on his life as an individual and his relationships with others. The show aims to present a new comprehensive portrait of the painter often described as "solitary and high-minded."
