Documentary Special: Pina Bausch and Nam June Paik. 'Performance Art: A Film Festival around Body and Space' to be held in August
Summary
A documentary special titled 'Performance Art: A Film Festival around Body and Space' will be held at Eurospace and other locations nationwide starting August 1. This project consists of 5 works across 4 programs, documenting the pioneers who revolutionized the performance art scene that has evolved into an indispensable genre in contemporary art. All works are making their theatrical debut in Japan. The poster visual features Merce Cunningham in various poses, dressed in costumes designed by Robert Rauschenberg, symbolizing the exploration of the possibilities of body expression. Performance art is defined as art that embodies uncertainty by crossing all expressive media such as literature, theater, plays, music, architecture, poetry, and film, centered on the body. It actively incorporates cutting-edge media and technology with the freedom not to be bound by expression methods, while surfacing fundamental raw emotions and questions to society. On the other hand, rooted in avant-garde art movements of the early 20th century that began with the negation of traditional art views and radical experimental spirit, it was long not considered mainstream in the art world due to the difficulty of leaving 'one-time expressions.' Recently, attention to this genre has been increasing, as performance art works have consecutively won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
