"BEYOND FEMALE GAZE" Held at Shibuya PARCO. Select Boutique "Sister" Questions the Gaze in Visual Expression
Summary
The select boutique Sister, which handles domestic and international designer brands and vintage items, is holding the exhibition "BEYOND FEMALE GAZE: Reconsidering Our Gaze" at Shibuya PARCO from March 4th to 8th, coinciding with International Women's Day. This is Sister's eighth such event focusing on feminism and gender, curated by artist and queer ecology researcher Maya Erin Masuda, with cooperation from film director Nina Menkes and film researcher Ayako Saito. The exhibition critically examines the structure of the "gaze" in visual culture, starting from Laura Mulvey's 1973 concept of the "male gaze"—which critiques the asymmetrical power structure where men are the viewing subject and women are the object. The event seeks to re-examine the potential of the "female gaze" as resistance to heteronormativity and patriarchy, and to imagine a future "us" gaze that is polyvocal and ever-evolving. Merchandise sales, including items from Sister's past film-related projects and books from Tongasaka Bunko, will take place, with a portion of sales donated to support activities promoting a society that respects diverse perspectives. Additionally, a special screening of Nina Menkes' documentary "Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power" followed by a panel discussion will be held on March 5th at White Cine Quinto on the 8th floor of Shibuya PARCO.
